7. BSB Innovation Award^® Environment

The BSB European Innovation Award will be presented for the twentythird time in 2026 by the independent BSB consulting and service office Dr. Riedel.

Submission periods

December 1, 2025 to February 13, 2026 (Categories 1 - 3)

Deadline: Friday, February 13, 2026, 6 p.m. CET

December 1, 2025 to May 29, 2025 (Categories 4 and 5)

Deadline: Friday, May 29, 2026, 6 p.m. CEST

The following applies to all deadlines: ALL the components of an application, in particular the SAMPLES required depending on the sub-category, must be here at this point in time.

Submission fee:

from the 3rd submission (inclusive) there is a for many submitters. In other words: the first 2 submissions of a year are still free.

The fee is 150 euros net per submission plus VAT.

The following scale applies:

1. Sponsors

Level 1-3: all submissions free

Level 4: four (4) submissions free

Level 5: three (3) free

The participation fees are included in the sponsorship contribution.

2. Non-sponsors

Fees from the 3rd submission.

The fees must be paid by April 1st (for spring awards) or September 1st (fall awards) of a year. If this is not done, the submissions are automatically considered rejected.

VERY IMPORTANT PLEASE READ.

Basic Rules:

1. One application per company and sub-category.

(As a trader you can submit applications for 2 of your companies)

2. Each application must be assigned to one of the 15 sub-categories. The desired assignment is checked. As a rule, we follow the wishes of the submitting companies, but BSB reserves the right to correct the assignment if necessary. A submission without attribution is considered incomplete and cannot be accepted.

3. Finished products companies can ONLY apply for Sub.-Cat. III, IV, V, VI, IX, X, XI, XIV.

4. Raw Material suppliers can ONLY apply for Sub.-Cat. I, II, VII, VIII, XI (Apps only), XII, XIII, XV

5. Submission of finished products or samples (Sub-Cat. XII) in all relevant sub-categories

a) When sending from outside of Germany, please plan at least 3, preferably 4 weeks so that the products arrive in good time before the end of the deadline.

b) for customs:

i. be sure to name the content.

ii. indicate that you send SAMPLES.

iii. do not state the value of goods that the products would cost on sale, because we do not sell them, we test them. Enter €1 as the value of the goods, because customs do not recognize a value of €0.

c) Sample size: typical trade fair give-aways.

Preamble

The innovation award, created by BSB founder Dr. Jan-H. Riedel in 2003, aims to promote the worldwide dissemination of current knowledge.

BSB has the ambition to provide the industry with the best possible support and therefore works closely with it.

A) Which prizes should be awarded in the current year?

Category 1: Cosmetics

Raw materials

- Subcategory I: most innovative raw material "active substances"

(All types of raw materials with an active effect on the skin, unless specifically mentioned in sub-category II; for raw materials intended for natural products, please use sub-categories VI and VII.

- Sub-category II: most innovative raw material "Functional/ Recipients"

Functional ingredients with an effect on the skin such as moisturizers, hydrating agents, emollients, UV absorbers as well as antioxidants, anti-dandruff or raw materials that are necessary for the formulation, e.g. preservation, emulsifiers, surfactants, thickeners etc.

Finished products section

Sub-category III and IV: Finished products, made for European markets (not only EU) available in stores or in beauty salons/ barber shops:

- Sub-category III: most innovative product

Unfortunately, hair shaping products, hair colors and pure parfum products (fragrances in solvent) cannot be submitted.

- Sub-category IV: best packaging

(Note: the products registered in sub-category III are automatically rated here as well, unless the same company has already made an extra submission here. Our basic rule then applies: 1 submission per company and sub-category)

Category 2: finished products of all cosmetics fields which do not fall

under categories 1 or 3

Sub-category V and VI: Finished products of all cosmetics fields, whole world

-Sub-category V: most innovative product

Medical products, products from influencers / internet-based (not available in stores) / indie brands / private labels / speciality products.

Unfortunately, hair shaping products, hair colors and pure parfum products (fragrances in solvent) cannot be submitted.

Evaluation criteria are product story, use of raw materials and application test

- Sub-category VI: best packaging

(Note: the products registered in sub-category V are automatically rated here as well, unless the same company has already made an extra submission here. Our basic rule then applies: 1 submission per company and sub-category)

Category 3: Natural products

Raw materials, especially developed for natural products

- sub-category VII: most innovative raw material "actives"

(explanation and definition see sub-category I)

- sub-category VIII"functionals/recipients"

(explanation and definition see sub-category II)

Finished products:

- sub-category IX: most innovative product available in stores or in beauty salons/ barber shops (Products that are only available online fall under sub-category V)

- sub-category X: best packaging

Category 5: Environment

- sub-category XIII: ingredients of all kind

Finished products

-sub-category XIV: finished products of all cosmetics fields as well as household products

Industrial processes

- sub-category XV: all types of industrial processes or circular economy approaches with positive environmental impact.

Evaluation criteria: how strong is the positive impact on the environment based on the available data. More details see under c).

Finished Products (sub-categories III-VI, IX, X):

Explanation

In sub-categories III and IX, end products are submitted that are either already on a European market or are about to be launched.

Sub-category V: from whole world

Please sent 5 (five) samples of the product you apply for to the address below. If the text on the package is not in english or german please add a translation into english. If you want to submit the same product here AND in category 5 "environment" please sent 10 products.

Applied Concepts (category 4/sub-category XI and XII):

Explanation

Category 4 is not intended for the same products as in categories 1, 2 or 3.

This category is for products in the phase between idea and concrete market launch. Because of this we called it „applied concepts“.

If you have an "applied concept" besides finished products, raw materials please or an app ask us if is fits to this category.

i) for finished products

Typical signs that an end product falls under category 4 are a) no final packaging, b) no final marketing brochures etc.

Raw materials, finished products and production processes can be submitted in this category which fall under one or more of the following terms:

- Source of ingredient(s) including replacement of other ingredient

- Additives, e.g. preservatives in a finished product

- Biodegradability

-Packaging reduction (Red. of virgin plastic, proportion of recycled material)

- Waste reduction

- Water usage in the production process

- Energy usage and type, i.e. renewable

- Emission reduction/ ig CO2 Reduction/ Neutrality

- Material Health Cradle-to-Cradle

- Social Fairness (Fair trade, Fair for life, wages, no child labor)

- OSHA across the entire value chain

Präambel

Der europäische Innovationspreis wurde 2003 ins Leben gerufen, um die weltweite Verbreitung von Wissen und Innovation zu unterstützen.
BSB hat den Anspruch, die Industrie optimal zu unterstützen und arbeitet deshalb mir ihr in enger Kooperation.

Einreichungsgebühren

Es gibt eine Einreichungsgebühr ab der 3. Einreichung (inklusive) für viele Einreicher. Mit anderen Worten: die ersten 2 Einreichungen eines Jahres sind nach wie vor frei.

Die Gebühr beträgt 150 Euro netto pro Einreichung plus MWSt.

Es gilt folgende Staffelung:

1. Sponsoren

Level 1-3: alle Einreichungen frei

Level 4: Vier (4) Einreichungen frei

Level 5: Drei (3) frei

Die Teilnahmegebühren sind im Sponsorenbeitrag enthalten.

2. Nicht-Sponsoren

Ab der 3. Einreichung Gebühren.

Die Gebühren sind bis zum 1. April (für Frühjahrsverleihungen) bzw. 1. September (Herbstverleihungen) eines Jahres zu bezahlen. Geschieht das nicht, gelten die Einreichungen automatisch als zurückgewiesen.

Grundregeln

1. Eine Bewerbung pro Firma und Sub-Kategorie

(Als Handelshaus können Sie pro Sub-Kategorie Bewerbungen für 2 Ihrer Firmen übermitteln)

2. zu jeder Bewerbung gehört eine Zuordnung der Einreichung zu einer der 15 Sub-Kategorien. Die gewünschte Zuordnung wird überprüft. In der Regel folgen wir den Wünschen der einreichenden Firmen, aber BSB behält sich das Recht vor, die Zuordnung wenn notwendig zu korrigieren. Eine Einreichung ohne Zuordnung gilt an unvollständig und kann nicht angenommen werden.

3. Endprodukthersteller können NUR in den Sub.-Kat. III, IV, V, VI, IX, X, XI, XIV Anmeldungen vornehmen.

4. Rohstoffhersteller können NUR in den Sub.-Kat. I, II, VII, VIII, XI (nur Apps), XII, XIII, XV Anmeldungen vornehmen.

5. Bei Einsendung von Endprodukten oder Rohstoff-Mustern (nur für Sub-Kat. XII) in allen relevanten Sub-Kategorien

a) bei Zusendung von außerhalb Deutschlands planen Sie bitte mindestens 3, besser 4 Wochen ein, damit die Produkte rechtzeitig vor dem Ende der Deadline ankommen.

b) für den Zoll:

i. achten Sie unbedingt darauf, den Inhalt anzugeben.

ii. geben Sie an, dass Sie MUSTER verschicken.

iii. geben Sie nicht den Warenwert an, die die Produkte im Verkauf kosten würden, denn wir verkaufen sie ja nicht, sondern testen sie. Geben Sie als Warenwert 1€ an, denn der Zoll kennt keinen Wert 0€.

iv. Für Einsendungen aus dem Nicht-EU-Ausland (zB Schweiz): die EORI-Nummer von BSB für den Zoll lautet DE2084295

Sub-Kategorie II: functionals und recipients
(funktionale Wirkstoffe mit Wirkung auf die Haut wie Moisturizer, Emollients, UB-Absorber oder Antioxidantien, Anti-Schuppen Wirkstoffe bzw. Rohstoffe, die für die Rezeptur notwendig sind. z.B. Konservierung, Emulgatoren, Tenside, Verdicker etc.)

-Innovativstes Endprodukt für den europäischen Markt (nicht nur EU) aller kosmetischen Felder
Anmerkungen:

Die Produkte müssen in Geschäften oder zB in Kosmetik- oder Friseursalons erhältlich sein. Bei reinem Vertrieb über das Internet: Sub-Kategorie V!)

Haarverformungsmittel, Haarfarben und reine Parfümprodukte (Duftstoffe in Lösungsmittel) können leider nicht eingereicht werden.

Sub-Kategorie III: Bewertungskriterien sind Produktstory, Einsatz von Rohstoffen und Anwendungstest

-Medizinische Produkte, Endprodukte von Pharmafirmen, Influencern/ internetbasierend (nicht in Läden erhältlich) für ALLE Teilmärkte/ Indie-Brands/ Private Labels/ Spezialprodukte weltweit.
Haarverformungsmittel, Haarfarben und reine Parfümprodukte (Duftstoffe in Lösungsmittel) können leider nicht eingereicht werden.

Sub-Kategorie V: Bewertungskriterien sind Produktstory, Einsatz von Rohstoffen und Anwendungstest

B) Die Bewertungskriterien der Jurys

C) Wann ist ein Rohstoff innovativ?

a) Wenn er neu ist (seit der letzten Preisverleihung gelauncht), und relevant.
b) Wenn er zwar älter ist, aber z.Z. voll im Trend, und noch nicht eingereicht wurde oder eine deutliche Verbesserung gegenüber dem Vorprodukt oder dem Marktstandard aufweist.

D) Welche Kriterien muß ein End-Produkt erfüllen, um eingereicht werden zu können?

In den Sub-Kategorien III, V und IX werden Endprodukte eingereicht, die sich entweder bereits auf einem Markt befinden (und nicht älter als 1 Jahr sind) oder kurz vor der Markteinführung (wobei das finale Produkt zugesandt wird) stehen.

Die Jury bewertet die Produkte in den Kategorien: Performance (Anwendungstest), Produktstory, Rohstoffeinsatz, Verpackung.

E) Angewandte Konzepte/ Ideen - Kriterien

Kategorie 4 (Sub-Kategorien XI und XII) ist nicht für dieselben Produkte wie in Kategorie 1, 2 oder 3 vorgesehen.

Nr. 4 gilt für Produkte in der Phase zwischen Idee und konkreter Markteinführung. Aus diesem Grund haben wir es „angewandte Konzepte“ genannt.

Wenn Sie neben Fertigprodukten oder Rohstoffen ein anderes "Konzept" haben, fragen Sie uns bitte, ob es zu dieser Kategorie passt.

Speziell Endprodukte
Typische Anzeichen dafür, dass ein Endprodukt unter die Sub-Kategorie XI fällt, sind a) keine endgültige Verpackung, b) keine endgültigen Marketingbroschüren usw.

Zuzusenden sind

i) für Endprodukte
a) Produktstory, gerne auch einen Entwurf einer angedachten Werbung, in englisch oder deutsch
b) der Produktentwurf selbst in fünffacher Form
c) INCI Deklaration

Die Jury bewertet die Produktkonzepte in den Kategorien: Performance (Anwendungstest), Produktstory und Rohstoffeinsatz.
Konzepte für Haarverformungsmittel, Haarfarben und reine Parfumprodukte können leider nicht eingereicht werden.

ii) für Rohstoffe
Zuzusenden sind
a) Produktstory in englisch oder deutsch, gerne als PPT.
b) die innovative Anwendung in einer Formulierungsgrundlage 5x. Mustergröße: typische Give-Aways zB auf Messen.
c) INCI Deklaration der Formulierung

Die Jury bewertet die Produktkonzepte in den Kategorien: Performance (Anwendungstest), Produktstory und Rohstoffeinsatz.

iii) Apps

Wenn Sie zb als Rohstofflieferant eine App haben, die für das Formulieren von Produkten bei Endproduktherstellern hilft, kann sie hier eingereicht werden.

F) Umweltpreis (Kategorie V)

In dieser Kategorie können Rohstoffe, Fertigprodukte und Produktionsprozesse eingereicht werden, die unter eins oder mehrere der folgenden Begriffe fallen

- Quelle der Rohstoffe einschließlich Ersatz eines anderen Rohstoffs

- Additive, z.B. Konservierungsmittel in einem fertigen Produkt

- Biologische Abbaubarkeit

- Verpackungsreduzierung (Reduktion von "virgin" Kunststoff, Anteil des recycelten Materials)

- Abfallreduzierung

- Wasserverbrauch im Produktionsprozess

- Energieverbrauch und -typ, d.h. Erneuerbare

- Emissionsminderung zB CO2-Reduktion / Neutralität

- Material Health Cradle-to-Cradle

- Soziale Fairness (Fair Trade, Fair for Life, Löhne, keine Kinderarbeit)

- OSHA über die gesamte Wertschöpfungskette

Ein Rohstoff oder Fertigprodukt, welches in einer der drei Kategorien 1-4 eingereicht wurde, kann ZUSÄTZLICH auch hier eingereicht werden. Wenn Sie ein Endprodukt oder eine Verpackung, die Sie bereits in einer der 4 ersten Kategorien eingereicht haben, auch hier einreichen möchten, benötigen wir anstelle von 5 dann 10 Muster, da sie an die Mitglieder von zwei unterschiedlichen Jurys versandt werden.

Bei Bewerbung nur in dieser Kategorie mit einem Verpackungsmaterial oder Endprodukt: bitte 5 Muster schicken.

Wenn Sie meinen, Sie haben auch ein Produkt oder einen Rohstoff, der hier hineinpassen würde, aber es fällt nicht unter eins der oben genannten Begriffe, sprechen Sie uns gerne an.

Endprodukte:
Bitte senden Sie das Produkt in 5facher Ausführung in der finalen Verkaufsform (die Jury soll das Produkt in der Form bewerten, in der es auch ein Verbraucher erhält; sollte die finale Verkaufsform nicht in engisch oder deutsch sein, bitte mit englischer Übersetzung anbei) an:

I) Live-Verleihung für ROHSTOFFE der Kategorien 1 und 3:

J) Verleihung Endprodukte (Kat. 1-3)

Der BSB Innovation Award "Endprodukte" wird online eine Woche vor dem Live Event (see I) vergeben.

Der Termin wird rechtzeitig mitgeteilt.

K) Verleihung Angewandte Konzepte (4) und Umwelt (5)

Der BSB Innovation Award "Umwelt" wird wie jedes Jahr zusammen mit den Awards "Angewandte Konzepte" im Herbst ohne Veranstaltung in virtueller Art und Weise vergeben.

So soll verhindert werden, dass es einen unnötigen Einfluss beim "Carbon Footprint" gibt.

Der Termin wird rechtzeitig mitgeteilt.

L) Preise
Alle Preisträger erhalten die Erlaubnis, dass Logo des jeweiligen Gewinns und Jahres zeitlich und für alle Marketingzwecke unbeschränkt zu verwenden.
